found: Kentucky encyclopedia, ©1992:page 803 (John Thomas Scopes, born in Paducah, Ky. on August 3, 1900; moved to Salem, Ill.; attended University of Illinois, transferred to University of Kentucky in 1921 and graduated from there in 1924. Taught at Rhea County Central High School in Dayton, Tennessee where as a substitute he tested the Tennessee Butler Act by expanding upon Charles Darwin's theory of evolution, for which he was arrested and tried in the July 10, 1925-July 21, 1925 State of Tennessee v. John Thomas Scopes, aka "Scopes Trial". Subsequently he attended the University of Chicago; unsuccessfully ran for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives; died in Shreveport La., October 21, 1970.)
