Wittenberg in 1603, but for his youth and an inability to pronounce the letter R, and by the encouragement of an uncle, a well-known physician, he chose medicine rather than theology; 4 years of medical study in Wittenberg and a year in Jena, obtaining the master's degree in 1608; further study in Frankfurt/Oder and Palma (taking up classical studies again), and return through Basel, obtaining the doctorate; 1615 as physician in Altorf [thus: i.e. Altdorf bei Nürnberg, marrying a Nuremberg woman], and 1616 in Hof; 1618 personal physician in comital Reuss, and inspector and professor in the gymnasium of Gera; 1627 personal physician in ducal Saxony and municipal physician in Altenburg, and for his great services during a pestilential outbreak elected mayor, retiring from office in 1657; refused several offers of medical practices to continue his philological studies, and 1660 retired completely from Altenburg, being named an electoral Saxon counsellor and moving to Leipzig, devoting his final years to teaching and philology; died in Leipzig in 1667, his death date being Jan. 17th, but also Feb. 13th or 14th are indicated)
