(Henry Failing; b. in New York City in 1834; traveled with his father to Portland, Or., where they opened a mercantile business, J. Failing and Company; in 1864 Henry's father retired and he took over the business; in 1871 he merged with a partner and the business became Corbett, Failing and Company; that company acquired the majority stock in the First National Bank in 1869; Failing also served as mayor of Portland from 1873 to 1875, as chairman of the Portland Water Company, and as a member of the board of regents of the University of Oregon; he died in Nov. 1898)
