Oxford Dictionary of National Biography website, 18 May 2016: individual entry (Gardiner, Samuel Rawson (1829-1902), historian, was born on 4 March 1829 at Ropley, near Alresford, Hampshire; Samuel Gardiner, at Winchester College from 1841, matriculated as a commoner at Christ Church, Oxford, in October 1847. Awarded a studentship in 1850, he graduated BA in 1851, but did not proceed MA until 1884; in London: he lectured at King's College from 1872; A year later (23 February 1902) he died, a few days before his seventy-third birthday, at 7 South Park, Sevenoaks, where he had been living latterly. He was buried in Sevenoaks.)
