Sporn, Philip, 1896-1978


  • [Philip Sporn (b. November 25, 1896, Solotwina, Galicia, Austria-d. January 23, 1978, New York City) was an electrical engineer and public utility executive. Sporn came to the United States with his parents and was naturalized in 1907. He attended New York City schools and received a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering in 1917 from Columbia University School of Engineering. Sporn began working at the American Gas and Electric Company, predecessor to American Electric Power, in 1920 and worked his way up to chief engineer by 1933. From 1933 to 1947 he was chief engineer of the company and its subsidiaries. In 1947 he was appointed president and chief executive officer of the company and its subsidiaries. Sporn retired as president in 1961 but continued as a director until 1969. He was a consultant to American Electric Power Company until his death. Sporn also worked with the Ohio Valley Electric Corporation, Indiana-Kentucky Electric Corporation, and Nuclear Power Group, Inc. He was a visiting professor at Cornell College of Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology School of Engineering, and Manhattan College. He is the son of Isaac and Rachel Kolker Sporn. He married Sadie Posner and they had three children. Sporn is interred in Mount Hebron Cemetery in Flushing, New York.]
