(De Hondt (Henri), or Hondius le Vieux; Henri Hondius le Vieux; draftsman and engraver; born in Duffel (formerly in Brabant) 9 June 1573; died, according to the most reliable opinion, in The Hague, in 1610 [i.e., 1650?], where he was still living as of 1649; apprenticeship in Brussels with Godefroi van Ghelder, jeweler, received lessons in drawing from Jean Wiericx, and learned copper engraving; studied mathematics, perspective, architecture, and building fortifications; at age 25, married in Holland, to a noblewoman from The Hague; traveled in France, England, and Germany; some of his work has been attributed (incorrectly or with differing opinions) to Henri Hondius le Jeune, the son of Josse Hondius)
