found: Smithsonian Institution archives website, March 15, 2018(Gerald Webber Prescott was born in LaPorte City, Iowa, on September 25, 1899, but moved to Grants Pass, Oregon, with his family when he was four. He attended Willamette University studying journalism, but left to join the U.S. Army during World War I. At the War's conclusion, he decided to pursue a degree in botany which he earned at the University of Oregon (1923). He later earned a M.A. (1926) and Ph.D. (1928) from University of Iowa. In 1925 he married Terressa Cox. Prescott was Associate Professor at Willamette University (1928-1929) and Albion College in Michigan (1929-1946). He went on to become a professor of botany at Michigan State University (then Michigan State College) until his retirement in 1968. His primary research areas in botany were limnology and phycology. During World War II, he was part of the U.S. Government quinine expedition in Ecuador.
