Earned BA in 1947 from San Diego State College (now University) and in 1948 his MA from Claremont Graduate School. In 1954 earned his PhD at the University of California, Berkeley. After short term teaching positions at the University of Oregon and Southern Methodist University, he taught 1958-1969 at Smith College in Massachusetts, then since 1969, taught at the University of California San Diego, specializing in Mexican history emphasizing the Great Revolution. Author of at least six books on that topic and one on Fidel Castro's Cuban revolution.)
