An alum of the University of New Mexico and a generous friend of the Latin American & Iberian Institute, Greenleaf was born on May 6, 1930; at UNM Greenleaf obtained a B.A. in Government studies in 1953, an M.A. in Inter-American Affairs in 1954, and a Ph.D. in History in 1957. He lived in Mexico City for 13 years teaching and researching at what is now known as the University of the Americas; from 1969 to 1998 he taught at Tulane University and retired to Albuquerque)
