The new Oxford companion to literature in French, 1995, via Oxford reference website, 3 May 2023 (Choisy, François-Timoléon, abbé de (1644-1724); Perhaps the 17th century's most curious figure. In his ecclesiastical career, he served the cardinals of Bouillon and Retz as a diplomat, followed Louis XIV in his campaigns of the 1670s, and participated in the 1684 embassy to Siam. He won election to the Académie Française for his Journal du voyage de Siam (1687). From 1668 on, Choisy often lived publicly as a woman, calling himself first Madame de Sancy, then the comtesse des Barres. He left curious accounts of this other life, Histoire de Madame la comtesse des Barres (published 1735) and fragments (published 1862), and a story, Histoire de la marquise-marquis de Banneville (1695-96))
