He is the world's foremost expert on Robert Boyle, the seventeenth-century scientist who was one of the founding members of the Royal Society. Professor Hunter has made an incomparable contribution to the understanding of early modern science. During the past 20 years he has been the principal editor of Boyle's Works (14 volumes, 1999-2000), Correspondence (6 volumes, 2001) and Work diaries. He was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 2007. His broader interest is the culture of early modern England as a whole, especially its visual culture, and between 2006-9 he directed a project funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council for a digital library of British printed images to 1700.)
