- found: Grove music online, Feb. 18, 2014(Pryor, Arthur (Willard); b. St. Joseph, MO, 22 Sept 1870; d West Long Branch, NJ, 18 June 1942; American trombonist, conductor, and composer. He served as conductor of the Stanley Opera Company from 1890 to 1892, when he was offered a position as trombone soloist with the Sousa Band. His solos, in a popular idiom that incorporated trombone glissandos or "smears," complemented Herbert L. Clarke's sophisticated cornet solos, and by 1900 Pryor was a star attraction of the band, second only to Sousa himself. He was also assistant conductor of the band from 1895 to 1902. Pryor left Sousa in 1903 to form his own band, which gave its first concert in New York on 15 November. It made six nationwide tours (1903-9), but thereafter its engagements were limited to Asbury Park, NJ (over 20 summers); Willow Park Grove, NJ (10 summers); and Royal Palm Park, Miami, FL (10 winters); it also made recordings. Pryor retired in 1933)
