Became a gold miner in California and Mexico. Organized the Confederate Secret Society in 1862 in San Francisco to halt shipments of California gold to the U.S. Treasury. Captured and convicted of treason, he served four months until pardoned by President Abraham Lincoln. Married, then settled in San Francisco; later moved to his father's Millville, Kentucky farm. Left Kentucky in 1876 and divided his time between Kentucky and New York City. Died in New York City.)
