found: Oxford DNB, 15 September 2021(Adam, Alexander (1741-1809), schoolmaster and classical scholar, was born on 24 June 1741 at Coats of Burgie, a small farm in the parish of Rafford, Moray; rector of the Edinburgh High School; had written The Principles of Latin and English Grammar after observing how grammar was taught abroad on a trip to France in 1771 ... unlike previous grammars, such as Thomas Ruddiman's, which was in use in the school, Adam's was in English rather than in Latin; In 1791, published Roman Antiquities, or, A Description of the Manners and Customs of the Romans, a compendium intended for students of Latin literature; published other educational works: a volume of classical biography, a Latin dictionary, and A Summary of Geography and History, both Ancient and Modern; On 13 December 1809, he was seized by an apoplectic fit while teaching his class; died five days later at his house in George Square; buried at St Cuthbert's on 29 December 1809 after a public funeral at the school)
