In 1793 it had come under Russian rule and by 1797 was a county center in Podilia gubernia. Under Soviet rule from 1920, it became an okruha center (1923-1930, 1935-1937) and then an oblast capital (in 1941 and 1944-1954 of Kamianets-Podilskyi oblast))
