"He was reportedly born on March 8, 1892 (grave marker), March 16, 1892 (Social Security Death Index), May 7, 1893 (some family members), or May 8, 1895 (draft registration). When liner notes were being written for his first Piedmont album in 1963, John told the Spottswoods that he was 69. However, a year or so later he told Louisa Spottswood ... that he was actually 71 when rediscovered. Assuming that he considered himself 71 in 1963, this would make his birth year 1892. The most likely date, according to his grandnephew Fred Bolden, who remembers celebrating his uncle's birthday, is March 8. Controversy remains over the inscription on the grave marker, but it now appears that it is correct. For the purposes of this book March 8, 1892 is assumed to be his correct birth date.") page 196 (died November 2, 1966)
