  • Sources

    • found: Amelung, P. Peter Amelung's Johann Zainer, the Elder & Younger, 1985:t.p. (Johann Zainer, the Elder) p. 3, etc. (Ulm's first printer, whose first book dated 1473 has colophon: Getruckt tzu Ulm von Johanne Tzainer von Rütlingen; his last book was printed 2-5-1493; he was forced to leave Ulm because of debts; went to Augsburg and disappeared from recorded history; his son Johann Zainer, the Younger, remained in Ulm and in 1496 took up his father's printing business, even to the point of issuing the same book his father last issued; he must have died in the spring of 1541, from testimony of a document dated 4-13-1541 stating that someone was hired "an Statt Hannsen Zainers Selig" [this is a mistranslation of the original German "aber schon im Frühjahr 1541 muss er verstorben sein" (he must have been already deceased by early 1541])
    • found: Allg. deut. Biog.(Zainer, Johannes; also Zeiner)
    • found: Glaister, G.A. Glaister's glossary of the book, 1979(Zainer, Johann, fl. 1472-93; of Reutlingen; established first printing press in Ulm in 1472; in 1493 his creditors forced him to flee Ulm, but either he or a relative of the same name may have returned to continue printing from 1496 to 1523)
    • found: Amelung, P. Der Frühdruck im deutschen Südwesten, 1473-1500, c1979- ;v. 1, p. 15 (Johannes Zainer der Ältere)
    • found: Benzing, J. Die Buchdrucker des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts im deutschen Sprachgehiet, 1982:p. 469 (Hans Zainer; active 1472-1523 in Ulm; from Reutlingen; Ulm's first printer; had to leave Ulm in 1493; returned in 1496 and remained in book trade until 1523; still alive in 1527)
    • found: Wegener, J. Die Zainer in Ulm, 1904:p. 1 (Johann Zainer is a different person from Hans Zainer; there are marked differences between Zainer work before and after 1488, yet authorities cannot abandon the idea that there was only one Zainer in Ulm; Johann Zainer's birth date is unknown, but can scarcely be after 1440) p. 17 (Hans Zainer was still printing in 1515)
    • found: BM 15th cent. cat.,v. 2: p. xiii (as to Johann Zainer's later career doubts have been raised whether a few books printed in and after 1496 were by the Johann Zainer of 1473 or a son of the same name; there seems no strong reason to doubt that they are the same person, a point of no great importance anyway)
  • Editorial Notes

    • [Amelung's posit of a "Johannes Zainer der Jüngere" has not been substantiated; this heading covers the person(s) of this name printing in Ulm from 1472 to 1523 or later.]
