    • found: Kentucky encyclopedia, ©1992:pages 240-241 (John Jordan Crittenden; born September 10, 1786 in Woodford County, Ky., attended Washington College and graduated from William and Mary. Practiced law in Russellville, Ky., appointed attorney for the Illinois Territory in 1809; served in War of 1812; elected to the Kentucky House of Representatives for six consecutive terms starting in 1811, Elected to U.S. Senate in 1817, serving from March 4, 1817 to March 3, 1819. Moved to Frankfort, Ky. to practice law, then served in the Kentucky House of Representatives again 1829-1833. Served as Kentucky's secretary of state 1834, then again in the U.S. Senate March 4, 1835-March 3, 1841 when he resigned to become President Harrison's attorney general. Returned to U.S. Senate March 31, 1842-June 12, 1848. Elected governor of Kentucky in 1848 where he served until his resignation July 31, 1850 at which point he became President Fillmore's attorney general. Elected to U.S. Senate for a fourth time where he served March 4, 1855-March 3, 1861. Author of the Crittenden Compromise. Died July 26, 1863; buried in Frankfort, Ky.)
