Immigrated to the U.S. in 1902, working as a farmhand on Illinois, a logger in Minnesota and on the Northern Pacific Railway. Attended Chicago Business College in Illinois and purchased a farm near Hazelton, N.D. Helped found the first cooperative oil station in North Dakota. Recruited into the Nonpartisan League of the Republican Party, he was elected to the North Dakota House of Representatives in 1930 where he served four consecutive terms. Ran for state commissioner of agriculture and labor in 1938, he moved to Bismark. Served as commissioner until 1965, the longest tenure of any person in such a position in the U.S. Died in Bismark on August 3, 1976.)
