David, a French priest and seminary professor trained the first three members, including the first mother superior, Catherine Spalding. Adapted the rules of the Daughters of Charity (France) for the order. Sisters opened a one-room school for girls on St. Thomas farm in 1814 and moved to a larger site in Nelson County in 1822. Kentucky legislature incorporated the community on December 29, 1829 as the Nazareth Literary and Benevolent Institution. Later founded hospital schools of nursing in Louisville and Lexington as well as a liberal arts college and two mental hospitals in Louisville.)
