Born in Socorro County, N.M., soon after his family moved to Topeka, Kansas, later returning to Socorro. As a self-appointed special deputy, he rode into Frisco where a group of Texas cowboys were shooting at cattle and their Mexican owners. Taking one of the cowboys prisoner, Baca provoked a conflict in which lasted 36 hours. Baca was tried in Albuquerque and was acquitted. These events led Baca to become a folk hero. Read law and was admitted to the bar in 1894 and began a private practice in Socorro. Moved to Albuquerque in 1910 and was later elected sheriff of Socorro County, published a Spanish language newspaper and worked as a private dectective and attorney. Died in August 1945.)
