It was first mentioned in documents of the year 1362 when it was known as Brat︠s︡lavshchyna. In the 2nd half of the 14th cent. it was seized by Lithuania, and by 1569 it had become part of Poland where it was the center of the Brat︠s︡lavsʹke voi︠e︡vodstvo. From 1648 to 1712 Brat︠s︡lav was the center for the Brat︠s︡lavsʹkyĭ polk. In 1793, as part of Right-Bank Ukraine it was reunited with Russia. During 1795-1796 it was the center of the Brat︠s︡lavsʹke namisnyt︠s︡tvo. Soviet power was established there in Jan. 1918)

As part of Poland Brat︠s︡lav served as an important defensive point along its southern borders. In 1552 Brat︠s︡lav was destroyed by the Crimean khan Devlet-Gereĭ. After 1648 it was the center of the Brat︠s︡lavskiĭ polk, which was composed of Ukrainian Cossacks. The town was reunited with Russia in 1793)
