Bachrach graduated with a bachelor's degree in history from Harvard University in 1939, and in 1988 he earned a master's degree in Italian literature from Boston College. After graduating from Harvard he went into the family business at Bachrach Photography. He served with the United States Navy as an aerial navigator in the Pacific during World War II. Bachrach was married to Janice Daugherty in 1941 until her death in 1988; they had four children. He married Eleanor Volk in 1989.]
