After spending three years in prison he was exiled to the United States by the Pinochet regime in 1976. In the U.S. he has worked as an artist and as a human rights and political activist. As a musician he toured the U.S., Canada, Europe and Central America as a member of the latin folk group Grupo Raiz based at La Pena Cultural Center in Berkeley. Salgado is the subject of the documentary "Special Circumstances".)
