Before serving in the senate, he was a school teacher in Nodaway, Atchinson and Jackson counties in Missouri. He graduated from the Kansas City School of Law in 1900. He was also an oil producer, a farmer and a cattle raiser from 1919 to 1942. He was elected as a Republican to the U.S. Senate in 1942, and served from January 1943 to January 1949.]
