  • [Patrick Joseph Kennedy, commonly known as P. J., (b. January 1858, Boston, Massachusetts-d. May 18, 1929, Boston, Massachusetts) was a businessman and politician. He worked as a stevedore on the docks at the age of fourteen, and in time had saved enough to purchase several bars and a whiskey importing business. He was instrumental in the organization of two different Boston financial institutions, the Columbia Trust Company and the Sumner Savings Bank. Kennedy served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1884 to 1889 and the Massachusetts State Senate from 1889 to 1895. He was also an unofficial ward boss in East Boston Ward 2 for more than thirty years. He married Mary Hickey in 1887 and they had four children, including Joseph Patrick Kennedy, Sr., father of President John F. Kennedy. Kennedy is interred in Holy Cross Cemetery and Mausoleum in Malden, Massachusetts.]
