Melanchthon, Philip, 1497-1560. Apologia Confessionis Augustanae

  • [Phlipp Melanchthon wrote the Apology of the Augsburg Confession (Latin title: Apologia Confessionis Augustanae) during and after the 1530 Diet of Augsburg as a response to the Pontifical Confutation of the Augsburg Confession, the official Roman Catholic response commissioned by Emperor Charles V to the Lutheran Augsburg Confession of 25 June 1530. It was intended to be a defense of the Augsburg Confession and a refutation of the Confutation. Originally presented to the Diet of Augsburg on 22 September 1530, the Emperor refused to allow it to be read. The first printed edition appeared at the end of April or in early May 1531, printed with the Augsburg Confession. The second edition of the Apology was published in September 1531, in a version that pleased Melanchthon greatly. This version was signed as a confession of faith by leading Lutheran magnates and clergy at the meeting of the Smalcald League in February, 1537, and subsequently included in the German and Latin Book of Concord.]
