  • [The McGraw-Hill Companies is a global financial information and education company. Leading brands include Standard & Poor's Ratings Services, S&P Indices, S&P Capital IQ, McGraw-Hill Education, Platts energy information services, and J.D. Power and Associates.] Founder James H. McGraw, a teacher in upstate New York, began working in publishing in 1884, and purchased the American Journal of Railway Appliances in 1888. At the same time, co-founder John A. Hill was working as an editor at Locomotive Engineer. Over the next fifteen years, the two men pursued their separate careers specializing in technical and trade publications. In 1899, McGraw incorporated his publications under the heading of The McGraw Publishing Company; in 1902, John Hill followed with The Hill Publishing Company. Mutual interest led them to bring together their publishing enterprises to form the McGraw-Hill Book Company in 1909. McGraw-Hill Book Company became the McGraw-Hill Publishing Company, Inc. in 1917 after the death of John Hill. McGraw-Hill Publishing Company, Inc. unveiled a new corporate identify under the name The McGraw-Hill Companies in 1995. McGraw Hill Financial was created in 2013 after the sale of McGraw-Hill Education to Apollo Global Management, LLC.
