found: Oxford DNB, viewed 29 Feb. 2016(Atkinson, James (1780-1852), an accomplished Persian scholar, was born in the County of Durham, 9 March 1780. After studying medicine at Edinburgh and London, he accepted the post of medical officer on board an East Indiaman, and in 1805 was appointed an assistant surgeon in the Bengal service. In 1813, he was given the appointment of assistant assay master at the mint, which he retained until 1828. In 1818 he filled the deputy chair of Persian in Fort William College. He also held the post of superintendent of the Government Gazette from 1817 to 1828. In 1838 he was appointed chief surgeon to the army of the Indus. He was appointed a member of the medical board in 1845, retired in 1847 after forty-two years of service, and died of apoplexy at 18 Dorset Square, London, on 7 August 1852)
