He spent his childhood at Relecq-Kerhuon in the family home of Lossulien. At the beginning of the Second World War, in the summer of 1940, he joined the Free French Forces in London with his brother Henri (1920-2015). He was seriously wounded by a grenade near El-Alamein in Libya on November 5, 1942, losing his hands and eyesight.
