The name was given in 1791 by Juan Francisco de Eliza as isla Sucia, which has a Spanish meaning of foul. Captain Wilkes changed that named in 1841 to Percival Group; Capt. Kellett changed the name back to Sucia on British admiralty charts in 1847. The Lummi Indian name for the islands was Klow-co-me-ing, meaning "Mussels on the rocks.")
