- found: Encyc. Am.: v. 27, p. 711 ("While the British still held Boston, the patriots invaded Canada, which the Continental Congress hoped would become the 14th state. As early as May 1775, Ethan Allen and other Vermont frontiersmen established American control of the Lake Champlain region. In the winter of 1775-1776, Richard Montgomery drove from there to take Montreal, uniting his troops with those of Benedict Arnold, who had pushed his way up through the Maine wilderness. But the pair failed to capture Quebec, the French Canadians saw no reason to join the Yankees, and Canada remained in British hands.")
