It is the chief Western member of the class of duct flutes, being distinguished from most other members particularly by its thumb-hole. The neologism "blockflute," derived from the German Blockflöte, goes back at least to F.J. Giesbert's recorder tutor (Mainz, 1936). There are four main instruments in use today: the descant (known in the USA as the "soprano"); treble (in the USA "alto"); tenor, and bass. Sopranino and great bass instruments are also fairly common. In recent years the recorder with lowest note f has sometimes been termed the basset, because larger sizes have become more widespread: great bass (c), contrabass (F) and even subcontrabass (C) also called bass, great bass, and contrabass, respectively)
