- Here are entered general works on the musical form for solo instruments or chamber music combinations, usually in more than one movement and composed between the 17th century and the present. Works on the structure of individual movements in sonata form are entered under the heading [Sonata form.] Works on the sonata for particular instruments are entered under the heading [Sonatas] qualified by instruments and with appropriate subdivision, e.g. [Sonatas (Clarinet and piano)--History and criticism, Sonatas (Piano)--Analysis, appreciation, Sonatas (Violin and piano)--Encyclopedias.]
- Musical compositions for one or two solo instruments titled "Sonata" are entered under the heading [Sonatas,] followed if appropriate by medium of performance.
