The first use of the term 'on-line' in the context of approximation algorithms was in the early 1970s and used for bin-packing algorithms. Johnson suggests that the use of the words 'on-line' and 'off-line' lies in cryptographic systems, in which decryption was either done as part of the communications system (i.e., on the communication line) or after the fact by using other facilities (i.e., off the communication line).
