Summary
The first goal of the Roosevelt Memorial Association was to erect a monument in memory of TR in Washington, D.C. The original site was the general area between the Washington Monument and the Potomac River, bounded by 15th and 17th Streets. The RMA invited architects, sculptors, and landscape designers to compete for the commission to design the memorial with the above site in mind. The design of John Russell Pope, architect from New York, won the award by unanimous vote on Oct. 6, 1925. A model of the design in plaster, based on a scale of one-sixteenth of an inch to a foot, was prepared in 1926 by John Donnelly & Company for study by Congress in resolving the controversy over the location of the memorial. Opening scenes of the model, with long shots of the memorial and its grounds; many different camera angles, including panoramic views, of the memorial: its central feature is a huge shaft of water rising 200 ft. from the center of an island of white granite set in a circular basin, flanked by curving colonnades; many views of the architecture and sculpture which are classical in style; in two segments ca. ft. 271-305, TR addresses a group of suffragists from the porch at Sagamore Hill, 1917. Final panning views of the colonnades surrounding the memorial.
