Summary
On her deathbed, Avis Langley's mother begs her to watch over her wayward twin brother, Alec. Just before Avis marries Geoffrey Southerne, Samuel Ackroyd, the father of Bessie who is engaged to Alec, calls to report his disappearance. Avis follows him to New Zealand and convinces him to reform and marry Bessie. On the return trip, Avis' ship sinks and she is the only survivor. Geoffrey believes her to be dead and marries Viva Newmarch, whom he does not love. Viva falls down the stairs and dies. Then Avis reveals she is alive and is reunited with Geoffrey.
