Summary
Georgia dog trainer Harvey McNeil fears losing his job when the new owner of the ranch, Mr. Ames, shows more interest in raising horses than dogs. He convinces Ames to delay selling the dogs until he can show off one of his champions, Georgia Boy, in the field trials. Ames gives McNeil's son Lonnie a runt from one of the litters. He and his friend, Text Lee, name the dog Promise and train him to hunt. He raids the henhouse, earning the ignominious name of "biscuit eater," which is a dog that steals and does not hunt for its food. McNeil tells Sermon, Text's father, to get rid of the dog, but the boys retrieve him. They determine to regain his honor by winning the field trials, where Promise faces Georgia Boy in the finals. Sermon tells Text that if Georgia Boy loses, Harvey will lose his job. Lonnie calls Promise a biscuit eater and he runs away. Promise returns to his mate, but is shot by Sermon. Lonnie and his father emerge as sadder but wiser
