Summary
The Edward W. Brooke Collection is comprised of government and commercially produced works and unedited footage. Most of the materials relate to Brooke's political career as opposed to his personal and professional lives. There is unedited footage of his being sworn in as Massachusetts attorney general in 1963. The majority of the film and video dates from 1966 to 1968, during which time he ran for, was elected senator from Massachusetts and served his first term. There is unedited footage of the Massachusetts Republican State Convention of 1966, at which Brooke was nominated to be the party's senatorial candidate. There are three different versions of the same political spot for his senatorial campaign, which were shown on television and in movie theaters, and a thirty-minute campaign film, Assignment--E.W.B., which was aired on television.
Continued: There are several works that date from his first term in office. In 1968, Brooke toured twelve countries in Africa in 26 days to assess the impact of cuts in U.S. foreign aid programs. There is footage of him in Ivory Coast and Nigeria meeting with government officials and speaking with the media. There are public service announcements, such as for the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society. Brooke served on the Kerner Commission and there is an announcement regarding the results of those investigations and there are outtakes of him discussing these issues with a reporter from a local Washington television station.
Continued: There are some works which relate to the latter part of his political career, such as a film by the Republican National Committee on outreach efforts to the African American community and clips of interviews on local Boston talk shows during the massive blizzard of 1978. There are several miscellaneous works, which bear some small or no apparent connection to Brooke. For example, Brooke appears in an introduction made for Boston public schools which was added to the film Debrief--Apollo 8. The episode of the TV series The young lawyers, entitled Is there a good samaritan in the house?, does not seem to be connected with Brooke.
