Summary
Correspondence, memoranda, writings, reports, scientific data, subject files, organizational and government records, printed matter, photographs, and other papers relating to Shapley's career as a geophysicist specializing in the study of the ionosphere and to his participation in the International Geophysical Year (IGY), 1957-1958, a venture of scientists to coordinate the monitoring of geophysical and solar-terrestrial phenomenon. Also includes material relating to Shapley's years at the Central Radio Propagation Laboratory (U.S.) and later at the U.S. Environmental Science Services Administration and its successor, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Documents preparations for the International Geophysical Year by national and international scientific organizations in the 1950s including Shapley's work as co-chairman of the Committee on the International Geophysical Year, an organ of the National Academy of Sciences (U.S.), in cooperation with the Special Committee for the International Geophysical Year (CSAGI), an organ of the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU). Also documents initiatives such as ICSU World Data Center system and space programs implemented in the decades following the IGY; the International Years of the Quiet Sun, 1964-1965; and a post-IGY period spanning the years 1969 to 1983.
