These works span four decades and illustrate his early interest in American folk songs and gradual transition to a style of writing that incorporated the twelve-tone technique and serialism, as influenced by Alban Berg. Finney's diverse use of instrumentation is well-represented, with examples of orchestral, chamber, vocal, and solo voicing appearing throughout the approximately 125 titles. The Correspondence series consists of letters between Finney and members of his family. Of note is correspondence related to his commission from violinist Yehudi Menuhin for the 1958 Brussells World Fair, including letters between Finney and Menuhin, the U. S. Department of State, and the C. F. Peters Corporation regarding the publication of the workThe Miscellany series contains newspaper clippings, photographs of Finney and family, programs for performances of his works, and drafts for two commencement speeches given by Finney. Also present are approximately forty responses to a questionnarie sent by Finney in late 1942 to prominent American composers of the twentieth century regarding the role of the composer in war-time. Respondents include Ernst Bacon, Elliott Carter, Aaron Copland, David Diamond, Walter Piston, Quincy Porter, and William Schuman.Origin Date(s)1926-1977 (bulk 1929-1969) Authorized Access PointFinney, Ross Lee, 1906-1997 Ross Lee Finney papersCollection ArrangementCollection Organization: Organized into the following series: I.
