Summary
The collection contains music manuscripts from Finney's early career through 1969, as well as a selection of correspondence, programs, photographs, and clippings related to Finney's family and career
The Music series comprises the largest portion of this collection and consists mainly of music manuscripts in Finney's hand as well as Ozalids of holograph scores with his annotations. These works span four decades and illustrate his early interest in American folk songs and gradual transition to a style of writing that incorporated the twelve-tone technique and serialism, as influenced by Alban Berg. Finney's diverse use of instrumentation is well-represented, with examples of orchestral, chamber, vocal, and solo voicing appearing throughout the approximately 125 titles.
The Correspondence series consists of letters between Finney and members of his family. Of note is correspondence related to his commission from violinist Yehudi Menuhin for the 1958 Brussells World Fair, including letters between Finney and Menuhin, the U. S. Department of State, and the C. F. Peters Corporation regarding the publication of the work
The Miscellany series contains newspaper clippings, photographs of Finney and family, programs for performances of his works, and drafts for two commencement speeches given by Finney. Also present are approximately forty responses to a questionnarie sent by Finney in late 1942 to prominent American composers of the twentieth century regarding the role of the composer in war-time. Respondents include Ernst Bacon, Elliott Carter, Aaron Copland, David Diamond, Walter Piston, Quincy Porter, and William Schuman.
