Summary
This is the story of Gonaba, a primary school education inspector. He returns from France to his home country, Central African Republic, determined to help rebuild the country. He ends up living among the pygmies in the forest. Thinking that he is more knowledgeable than them, because of his education, he attempts to teach them to read and write. In the process he finds out he has a lot to learn from these "primitive" people. When circumstances force him to leave the forest and go back to town and to "civilisation" he realizes that he will forever miss the silence of the forest.
