Summary
Collection of field recordings of French Canadian folk songs and dance music, originally recorded on wax cylinders by Marius Barbeau in 1916. Singers were from Les Eboulements; St. Irénée; Tadoussac; Ste-Marie, Beauce; Montréal; Lévis; Beauharnois; Saint-Denis Kamouraska; St. Rémi de Napierville; Lachenaie; Notre-Dame du Portage; St-André de Kamouraska; Ste-Anne des Monts; and other places in Québec Province. Includes some dance tunes played on violin. The 200 cylinders were selected by Marius Barbeau from his field recordings. The collection includes correspondence between Marius Barbeau of the National Museum of Canada and Alan Lomax and others at the Archive of Folk Song, Library of Congress dated 1940-1947 (47 leaves) about the project to duplicate the Canadian cylinders and other matters, including Alan Lomax's field recordings of French language folksong in the United States; Amos Burg's collection of folksongs in Alaska; Laura Boulton's field recordings in Canada; and Alan Lomax's visit with Barbeau in Ottawa in February, 1941.
