Summary
Thomas Richardson was interviewed in 1986 about his involvement in World War I. He recalls being stationed in Metz, France. One specific situation he talks about involved a fellow soldier named Herman Lucas who was assigned to the guns while Richardson would feed the ammunition into the guns. Richardson doesn't recall this incident, but knows that Lucas was hit directly with a shell and was literally obliterated, the force knocked Richardson back and he sustained a shoulder injury; he states Lucas's parents never knew what happened to their son until 2 years later. He also tells of when his ship, the Henderson is torpedoed at night by a submarine, and how he wasn't sure what orders to follow; to stay at his post until he was relieved or abandon ship. He was able to make it down from the mast where he was stationed and get to a lifeboat; they were eventually rescued by another ship. He discusses his career choices after the war, when he did police duty in Boston during the police strike. He later attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston, but was offered a teaching position in New Haven, Connecticut. He wanted to finish his schooling, but the man hiring offered to transfer all his credits to Yale; that way he could teach in the morning (part-time) and then take his classes at Yale in the afternoon. He ended up teaching at this high school for 20 years once he finished his master's degree at Yale.
