Collection of field recordings of Appalachian string band music, Northeast fiddle tunes, and various interviews with performers of old-time music collected by Scott Odell from 1966-1970. Includes vocals and instrumental music performed on dulcimer, banjo, guitar, fiddle, and other instruments. Includes an interview with Ed Young, fife maker from Como, Mississippi at the 1968 Festival of American Folklife in Washington, D.C. Ernest Hodges was interviewed in 1970 for a Smithsonian exhibit, "Fiddling in America," and he comments on blackface shows, novelty instruments, the entry of mandolin and guitar into eastern Kentucky playing, "Cold Creek March" (from an 1890s miners' strike) and other topics; Tommy Jarrell discusses Civil War experiences of his grandfather; Ruth Russell discusses the influence of radio on old-time music.
