He thinks the cathedral must be somewhere in Europe and goes there one summer to search for it. Near the beginning of his trip, he meets a woman in Lisbon who is buying furniture and handicrafts and they spend the summer wandering through Portugal, Spain, France, Sweden, Denmark, Holland and Italy together.
