Correspondence including originals and transcripts of letters, envelopes, newspaper clippings, pension documents, a copy of a photograph, and a drawing relating mainly to Kline's Civil War service with the 115th New York Infantry Regiment, Company D. Subjects include Kline's capture at Harpers Ferry, W. Va., and time in a prison camp in Chicago, Ill.; daily camp life; his service near Alexandria, Va., and Hilton Head, S.C.; the hospital in Hilton Head; the area of Hilton Head and Beaufort, S.C.; engagements to take the city of Charleston, S.C.; training African-American draftees and volunteers; service near Bermuda Hundred and Petersburg, Va.; and his injuries from an assault on Fort Gilmer and recovery at Hampton Military Hospital, Va. Includes a letter (1864 June 22; Point of Rocks, Va.) describing a camp inspection by President Abraham Lincoln, General Benjamin F. Butler, and staff.
