Summary
Collection of field recordings of 26 oral history audio interviews, with recordings logs, and 14 photographs. The project builds on over thirty years of agricultural research by the Vermont Folklife Center (VFC). VFC's earlier efforts focused on agricultural practice in Vermont from the early through mid-twentieth century. With this project VFC sought to examine the emerging localvore/local food movement in the state as expressed through the experiences of farmers and a selection of the non-profit organizations that support them. Farmers interviewed for the project ranged from new, young agriculturalists to long-established farmers working multi-generational operations. Although coming from a range of backgrounds and perspectives, all these individuals hold in common a passion for agricultural work and a dedication to finding ways for farming to continue to be a viable occupation in Vermont. The expanding interest in locally grown and produced food provides a valuable opportunity for these producers. In response they have developed a range of strategies for expanding their markets, including community supported agriculture (CSAs), farmers markets, and growing networks of local, institutional buyers such as the University of Vermont Medical Center, networks such as Vermont Farm to Plate and Farm to School, Co-ops and grocery stores. In addition to farmers, VFC interviewed a number of individuals employed by non-profit organizations that purchase directly from producers or provide support services to farmers. Two key organizations helped frame aspects of the project: the University of Vermont Medical Center (UVM Medical Center) and the Rutland Area Farm and Food Link (RAFFL).
