Summary
In the case of God on Three Sides, the specific religious experience under examination is the Pietistic element in German Protestant Christinaity. Pietists believed that spiritual regeneration, in which a portion of God's very own Spirit indwells the repentant sinner, was essential to one's power to live in God's will. The immigrant German Pietists given focus in the study belonged to two distinct ethnic German Pietist communities: Lutheran congregations serviced by mssionary pastors trained at the pietist Halle Institutes in the Kingdom of Prussia; and, the Renewed Unity of the Brethern which, by the 1740's, had established the communitarian town of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania -- Preface.
