Summary
A selection of 80 plates of Italian and Mediterrarean cities, from the Civitates Orbis Terrarum, an atlas completed in 1617 containing 546 perspectives, bird's eye views and maps of cities on four continents. The project was initiated by Georg Braun, a theologian from Cologne, who wrote the texts that accompanied the images but are not included in this slim volume. Frans Hogenberg, his son Abraham, and Simon Van den Newel printed most of the plates, while the Flemish painter Joris [also known as Georg] Hoefnagel composed many of the live panoramic views.
